Moving into Your New Home

CONGRATULATIONS!
You have closed on your new home and now you are ready to move! Think about your move as a series of small projects that you can begin while your home is under contract. Your move will progress as your contract and closing progress. That way, when the day comes to physically move your belongings, most of the details will be taken care of.

Keep detailed records--some moving expenses may be tax deductible!
Note: There is a ceiling on deductions which is outlined in detail in the IRS's Publication 521, "Tax Information on Moving Expenses." 

Here are a few tips and checklists so that your move is as effortless as possible:

• Register kids for school or daycare.

• Start gathering moving supplies.

• Inventory your belongings.

• Change your address with the USPS.

• Locate the nearest emergency centers and their numbers.

• Request moving estimates from movers and/or reserve truck.

• Make sure all home services and utilities have been ordered or transferred.

• Order home phone, TV, and Internet service.

• Schedule charities to pick up donated items.

• Have a garage sale.

• Notify subscription & prescription suppliers of address change.

• Schedule babysitter and pet sitter for moving day.

• Update your driver's license & car registration.

• Get any medications for family and pets.

• Get storage quotes.

• Book friends to help you move.

• Withdraw emergency moving money.

• Load your moving truck.

• Pack your plants.

• Plan or order meals for move day.

• Ensure your address has been updated.

• Send out change of address cards to friends and family.

• Exterminate unwelcome pests in your new home.

• Recycle your moving boxes.
